NOT BY WORD BUT BY ACTION

TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR (Ezek 18:25-28; Phil 2:1-11; Matt 21:28-32) This Sunday coincides with the 57th anniversary of the independence of Nigeria. On this day the church in Nigeria celebrates the feast of Our Lady Queen and Patroness of Nigeria and special readings have been chosen for the day. However, this reflection is on the readings of the 26th Sunday of the year, even though majority of the readers are in Nigeria and may hear different readings at mass. The Gospel reading of this Sunday features the first of the three parables told by Jesus, not in Galilee, but in Jerusalem. The three parables were addressed to the chief priests and the elders of the people (the religious leaders), and not to the crowd or to the disciples. The three parables are all about responding positively to God by our actions and not only by our words. In the first parable, Jesus gives us two examples. The first is that of the son who said to his father that he will not work but in the end went ahe...

be positive

A beautiful poem: The World is Mine Today, upon a bus, I saw a very beautiful woman, And wished I were as beautiful. When suddenly she rose to leave, I saw her hobble down the aisle. She had one leg and wore a crutch. But as she passed, she passed a smile. Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I have two legs; the world is mine. I stopped to buy some candy, The lad who sold it had such charm, I talked with him, he seemed so glad, If I were late, it'd do no harm. And as I left, he said to me, "I thank you, you've been so kind. It's nice to talk with folks like you. You see," he said, "I'm blind." Oh, God, forgive me when I whine. I have two eyes; the world is mine. Later while walking down the street, I saw a child I knew. He stood and watched the others play, but he did not know what to do. I stopped a moment and then I said, "Why don't you join them dear?" He looked ahead without a word, I forgot, he couldn't hear. Oh, God, forgive me ...

true love

Love... Love is not only in the words we say, it's in the things we do. It's not just in the morning smile that beautifies our faces, it's in the heart that's willing to give. Love is not in the fancy things of life we cherish, it's in the little things that don't matter. It's not in the kind gesture for a later reward, it's in the sacrifice we lay down for another. Love is not in the pleasure of a kiss, it's in the tolerance of character even when the lips become bitter. It's not in the beauty of a rose, it's in the perseverance to endure and stay after the rose dies. Love is not in the resurrection of old pain back to life, it's in the forgiveness of little wrongs and dead scars. It's not in the mockful judgement of another, it's in the heart that corrects without condemning. Love is not in a night of wine and sex, it's in the memories shared afterwards. It's not in the desire for immediate gratification, it...

the deal

1. Challenge your beliefs about what you can and can’t do. Maybe you are a good leader. 2. Challenge your ideas about how things should work. Sometimes when you decide how things should be you limit your ability to be effective in the world as it actually is. 3. Have a vision session. Write in a journal, create a video, sketch—anything that lets you explore what excites you most. 4. Look for opportunities in a tough situation. Avoid a victim mentality, and opt instead for a “ready for new beginnings” attitude. 5. Remove something from your life that doesn’t serve you to make room for something better and new. You never know what you might let in when you let something go. 6. Commit to something you always say you’ll do but always fail to start—and then take the first step right now. 7. Turn your focus from something don’t want to something you do want. This allows you to shift your energy from complaining to taking action. 8. Replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Positive energ...

your comfort is your limitation

3 Reasons Your Comfort Zone is Killing you (and How to Beat It) By Matt Valentine August 22, 2017 It’s killing you slowly. And it’s often untraceable. It’s your comfort zone — and stepping outside of it is key to discovering your passion, accomplishing your goals, and finding happiness. But it’s not so bad, right? I mean, you’re comfortable, so you must be happy? If only it worked out that way. Unfortunately, the longer you stay within your comfort zone, the less happy you tend to be. So, why do we stay within our comfort zone then? Because it takes energy to move something into action. That’s a simple fact of life. Science uses the word energy to describe the process in natural things, but when we talk about ourselves (humans), we usually just use the word motivation. Without the proper motivation, we’re willing to stay in a situation that doesn’t make us completely happy, for fear that the discomfort we’ll feel by stepping outside of our current circumstances will be greater than th...

you can do it

Let Your Dreams Propel You through Valleys and Over Mountains By Claire Jones Each one of us has a light within that radiantly burns; it never goes out. Life’s challenges and inconsistencies may weigh you down, but let your dreams catapult you beyond all mental, physical, and psychological limitations — be merciless in your pursuit of self-actualization. Use untapped potential within to fire up your internal engines; shift all gears to go, blast through all impediments. Ignore the negative environmental noise, which threatens to consume. Focus. Determine to turn all obstacles into rafts and propel yourself across life’s turbulent waters. Never stop. Never give in. Never give up. Let Your Dreams Propel You through Valleys and Over Mountains Believe you can and you’re halfway there. – Theodore Roosevelt Aspire Push forth with your dreams and goals no matter the setbacks. It’s not too late. Whatever challenges you may have faced this year, or breakthroughs that you may have enjoyed, I want to remind you that the end can be better than the beginning. One of the most transformational mindset shifts I have been able to make in my own life, and a strategy that you can use right now to shift your perspective and circumstances completely, is to choose love over fear. deal with it

Economist Tim Harford once said “ego is the enemy of innovation” when he was trying to explain that the world of success requires us to accept our mistakes and make corrections or even adapt so quickly. One reason why a lot of people do not achieve their desired success in life is the fear they have for failure. Sometimes, things take an entirely unexpected course that breaks all expectations and results in failure. Life is unpredictable and many times we keep wondering what we did wrong. In such situations, all our plans come to naught, and we are left depressed and most times, desperate. It is better to come to realize that failure is a feedback, and it is not the end. Though failure comes with the feelings of disappointment, rejection, embarrassment, and many other negative emotions, it is not a sin to fail. We should remember that failure has its advantages; if you fail, then you understand the approach which does not work, and you get the opportunity to try someth...

relationship goals

20 Important Relationship Goals You Actually Want I’m online all day, every day, and so I end up seeing a lot of the  #RelationshipGoals  memes  that float around social media. I’ve seen #RelationshipGoals that range from very cute to sickeningly exaggerated (most are the latter, to be honest). In the beginning, this relationship goals meme was  realistic  – pictures of happy couples holding hands while walking in the snow, cuddling and watching a movie together, or sleeping with an adorable puppy. But at this point, relationship goals have become  completely over-the-top.  From long,  dramatic declarations of love  on an Instagram picture to cuddling in positions that  seem extremely uncomfortable , some relationship goals make me want to  roll my eyes  until forever. At this point, it feels like those #RelationshipGoals pictures or actions that get all the likes and shares  aren’t even authentic ...

Sunday teaching

THE OTHER SIDE OF PETER TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY OF THE YEAR In the Gospel of last Sunday we heard the wonderful declaration of Peter to Jesus: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God”. In response, Jesus declared him blessed, because such declaration was divinely revealed. In addition, Jesus named him the rock upon which his church would be built. He promised to give him the keys of the kingdom of heaven, with the power to bind and loose. In the part read today, the same Peter, in his characteristic impulsiveness and impetuosity, tried to stand against the will of God in the life and mission of Jesus. He tried to dissuade Jesus from taking the path of the cross. This merited him a sharp rebuke from Jesus, in place of the beatitude he received last Sunday. The action of Peter today shows his other side, the human nature. It was to this other side that Jesus rebuked sternly: “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me; for you are not on the side of God, but of human”. The human...

lets think

CHURCHES AND HOTELS just yester-night, i had a real thought about the connection of the two in my country. # they are the order of the day in my country: investment means # they run on daily basis as two parallel ideologies but yet chase one goal: winning peoples interest. # they house each other but yet think the world will be better if either of them is erased. # people existing in both don't like themselves. # they are meant for service but instead rip people off. # their major targets are the affluent in the society. # they preach charity but practice greed. # the both believe they are helping the society with creation of jobs but under pay workers. # the both constitute nuisance in the environment with their noise pollution. # the both condemn people even before knowing them. subscribe on our site @ www.guruarena.com.ng to learn more from us for free.
